This software allows a user to set up audio and visual alarms

This new version differs from the previous version in several ways.

Dear people:

This is the "post" version of CompuCash, which I wrote.  I decided
that people had a dificult time recognizing the value of it without
actually seeing it (although some did).  This document is most of
the "shareware" version and is shareware, as well.  So here's my
deal:

If you read this and like it, are entertained by it, or you realize
something about the subject matter you did not realize before
(computers, money, etc.), or if you actually do gain by the content
of CompuCash, please help me out by compensating me for my efforts.  Be
honest - society needs more of honest.

I'm asking $20 for my work, here.  If you think that's too much,
send what you think it is worth.  If you do send the $20, I will
send you the exclusive information I deleted from the shareware
version, which registrants of that version received.

That includes the lists of computer-related (mostly Mac) marketable
product ideas, and service ideas.  They are for things not yet being
done or made.  Things any registrant may implement and cash in on.
This "post version" has some examples, so you can decide if it would
be worth a peek at more, with some illustrations (GIF).

It also included CompuCash in a ready to print form, with a color
title page, and instructions to make a professionally bound hard
copy.

syntesys language. It have been integrated with a simple text

"MacOberon 4.0 Folder", which contains all of the files that the
MacOberon system is made up of, and "Toolbox Interfaces", which
contains interface files for expert programmers.

MacOberon requires a Macintosh equipped with an MC68020 CPU
and a floating-point coprocessor (or an INIT that emulates
the FPU).  It will not run on a Macintosh Classic or any
other Macintosh that has only an MC68000 in it.  On the
Macintosh Quadra, MacOberon runs with caching enabled.

MacOberon now supports QuickDraw printers.
A large Monitor is highly recommended.

not overlap each other.  A great geometric puzzler that goes back 40 years!

Pentominoes 1.4.1 fixes several technical bugs (27, to be exact) from version
1.4  Pentominoes is distributed under the GNU General Public License; complete
C source code will be uploaded to the archive sites in a separate archive.  If

  No doubt many folks would love to fly above the clouds from
  Pittsburgh International to Morgantown, West Virginia--home of the
  11-0 Sugar Bowl bound West Virginia Mountaineers! (Go Ers!) With the
  PIT-MGW controller and a few other goodies, you will be able to do
  that just that. You'll even be able to communicate in real time with
  simulated air traffic controllers. The controllers will call out
  positioning information to you all along the route. When you break
  out of the clouds, Morgantown's Hart field will be dead ahead!

  The PIT-MGW controller simulates a Crown (USAir) commuter flight from
  Pittsburgh International to Hart Field in Morgantown. The air route
  follows the actual route flown by the commuter (weather permitting)
  several times a day, seven days a week. The aircraft usually flown is
  a Shorts 330. With full out throttle and a little imagination,
  Microsoft Flight Simulator's Cessna 182 can come close to emulating
  the Shorts.

  This is the first of what will be (hopefully) many controllers for
  Microsoft Flight Simulator and Miika Asunta's FS-ATC. I would enjoy
  hearing from private or commercial pilots or from air traffic
  controllers. Maybe you have a flight plan that would be fun to
  simulate. I'd be glad to work with pilots or controllers in creating
  new controller files, especially for ILS routes that professional or
  private pilots have flown.

			       Getting started

  To use this controller you need three things:
     1.  Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 (Mac version)
     2.  FS-ATC 2.1 Air Traffic Control software for Microsoft Flight
     Simulator
	 Macintosh version 4.0 (Available on Sumex-Aim and Nautilus CD-ROM.)
     3.  Mallard Scenery files,  SD-11 World Scenery and SD-9 World Scenery.

  Please see the read me file.  It contains more information on the
  controller and on how it operates.

  I worked very hard to make this controller as accurate as possible.
  Its development involved numerous conversations with professional
  pilots and air traffic controllers. I hope you enjoy it.

here, we have received numerous request for the FPU version of
the demo package.

proFit is an application for scientific data analysis for the
Macintosh.
It comes with a professional graphic editor for presentation of
data and mathematical functions, a built-in Pascal compiler for
defining functions
and data transformation algorithms, offers an interactive fitting
environment for modelling data and much more. And still, it is very

Our latest maintenance release is R6. Quicken 4 Release R6 includes fixes
to a few specific, customer-reported problems and improves application
compatibility on certain platforms.

However, R6 contains no new features or feature enhancements, so you may
not notice a difference when updating your copy of Quicken 4 to Quicken 4
R6.  Most people do not need to update to this release, but it will not
hurt to do so.

To make updating your copy of Quicken 4 easy, and to allow you to update to
the latest release at no charge, we have developed an updater patch -- the

I got the idea from a list I found.  IUm not sure where.
This stack is free.  It is designed for fun, but use these

Enclosed is an AppleScript that you can drag-n-drop files onto, and it will
login to you UNIX host, send the dropped files as news articles, and
disconnect.

You will have to open the script with script editor to make a few local
adjustments, and enter your username/password. You will also have to create
a new service in SITcomm that uses the Text Tool to send files, and this
service must be called "SendNews", and is used from the script.

We're going through our own conversion from a Mac-based network to a
Windows/Novell-based network at my workplace. From my recent experience,
Intel-based networks REQUIRE AT LEAST THREE (3) times the startup
(configuration, et al) costs of a Macintosh-based network. And this is if
you purchase every PC identical - same manufacturer, same cards, same hard
drive, same RAM... You get the picture.

Remember that 640K limit from oh-so-long-ago? Well, it's still there. Not
quite as predominant as it used to be, but it still requires time to figure
out what you want/need to load high vs low and, more important, if it'll
actually work.

Novell is a truly incredible NOS (network operating system) that gives you
almost limitless security configurations. This is both good and bad. While
you can create some pretty elaborate security schemes, you can also bank on
some serious learning and maintenance time.

After getting well into this new network setup configuration we found out -
quite bluntly from some of our consultants - that, "Novell and Windows
don't work well together." Argh! It's piece of cake - relatively speaking -
to connect to Novell via DOS. Doing so through Windows is something that
our highly esteemed consultants are working on right now.

And if you're interested in adding Macs to your Novell network, you can
probably add about a day of extra configuration on your server. Our same
consultants spent almost spent almost two days establishing communications
between our existing Mac-based network and our incredible Novell server.

I've been in on a little of the data conversion - using Nisus' powerfully
scriptable Find/Replace to alter some of the data. Personally, I don't see
much difference in data conversion costs with one platform over the other.
It would have more to do with the import abilities of your database.

Anyone out there go to the Apple Auction here in DC?  Other cities?

I went to the Ross-Dove Co. auction for Apple (it was in MacWeek and others)
and was really surprised at the high pricing of the bidding.  Eventually,
the prices came down as the afternoon went on but at the beginning people
were being outright stupid.

For example: at 10:30am, the CDROM 150s were going for $250!!! By almost
two pm, I picked one up for less than half that..

Anyone else have similar/different experiences there or at the other
auction locales?  If its nearby for you and you're in the market, I
would advise people to go but be willing to spend the afternoon (or come
late) as the first 2-3 hrs were not worth it!!!

I am looking for a control panel or extension that will let the user control
the size of the mouse pointer/cursor. There used to be a cdev called
BigCursor but it only worked under sys 6. I need something similar that
works under sys 7/7.1 for a 74 year old lady that I help who is having eye
problems. I have been able to enlarge everything else that she needs using
the Views control panel but she keeps loosing sight of the cursor.

Please reply to me and I will summerize for the net.

There is nothing as nice as having a HELP line like the readers of the
Info-Mac Digest with a zillion info sources on the other end of the line.

Subject: Duo vs. HWSU 2.0.1

I have a report that installing Hardware System Update 2.0.1 according to
directions on a Duo that's in a Duo Dock with its own hard drive can corrupt
the Duo's internal drive, rendering it unbootable. This is apparently a
problem
with HD SC Setup 7.2.2, part of HWSU 2.0.1.

The person who reported this worked with Apple tech support on identifying and
resolving it, and the workaround used was to connect the Duo as a SCSI disk to
another Mac, run FWB Hard Disk Toolkit, mount the Duo drive with an HDT
temporary driver, backup the contents, reformat with an older version of HD SC
Setup and restore the contents again.

Has anyone seen this problem? Can anyone confirm it?

I was wondering if anyone out there could give me suggestions on where I could
buy ink to refill my HP Deskwriter 550c.  About six months ago or so,  I
bought a "refill kit" from Computer Friends in Oregon for about $80!  The kit
included 4 syringes & needles, and 4 two oz. bottles of ink (red, blue, yellow
and black), as well as some gloves.  All of these things, except for the ink,
I had access to, so I basically wasted $40 on the syringes, needles and
gloves,
but I learned from that one...

Anyhow, I am now running low on ink...  Especially black ink...  If I was to
order the ink from Computer Friends, it would cost me $10 - $15 for two oz. of
a single color.  That means that if I wanted to get all four colors,  I would
have to shell out $60, which is fine, but 2 oz. doesn't last me all that
long...  Does anyone know of any other suppliers of ink?  It can be either
waterproof , or regular.  I am just looking for a better deal.  If you could
just post the name of the company, cost of the ink and a phone number I could
reach the company at, it would be much appreciated!

Subject: Intermittent Floppy Problems

Anthony, a HD diskette formatted to 800k will give bad results on some
floppy drives and be OK on others. It was not clear as to whether this
you could be your problem.  HD's should only be used at 1.4M in HD
floppy drives.  I have no idea as to whether 800k diskettes with the hole
punched in them so they look like HD diskettes have any problems.
When a floppy drive starts going bad, it will have trouble reading other
diskettes and disks it writes will be difficult to read on other drives.

It is time once again for the Netter's Dinner @ MacWorld.  This  is the first
of three calls for reservations.  Feel free to invite your friends.

MacWorld is Wednesday, January 5 through Saturday, January 8. My gut feeling
is
that we should have the dinner on Thursday or Friday (the 6th or 7th).  Also
up
for debate is whether we should go with a dinner, as we have in the past, or
change to a buffet in order to promote mingling and socialization.
Personally,
I was opting for seperate cubicals with Macs so we could communicate via
email,
but some thought that defeated the purpose of the affair.

Last year's dinner was excellent with HOT and spicy Hunan Chinese food
bringing
many a tear to participants' eyes.  It ran about $25.  The  buffet is only $12
but is correspondingly less interesting.  I haven't spoken to my contact there
yet, only a flunky, but I'm certain he can beef up the menu for us (or
asparagus it up for you Leonard).  Nevertheless, if the buffet comes out
wimpier than the dinner, I may make an executive decision, otherwise it is up
for the vote.

In addition, we have decided to do an awards show since we have a crowd, a
podium and an attitude.  Our show will be completely frivolous and irreverent,
in the net tradition.  I ask that each respondant include an award category
and
nominees.  I and a select group of idiots, er, judges will prune and massage
the list prior to the event.  Future calls will include the list as it
accumulates.  I'll start by including my category: Best Kept Internet Secrets
with nominees: the World Wide Web (ala NCSA Mosaic), Bolo and Inside Mac
Games.
Feel free to suggest additional nominees or categories.

Once again, I have to reiterate that this dinner is HOT AND SPICY.  We will
not
tone it down and will not be able to provide non-spicy variants since it is a
group meal.  We will be providing some vegetarian dishes so that Leonard and
others will be able to participate, but Hunan food is hot and spicy and that's
the way it is.  I'm sorry, but sacrifices must be made on occasion and if you
can't eat hot and spicy food then you are it.

So, RSVP with your votes:

1) Which day? Jan 5 through 8, 1994.

2) Sit down meal (as before with 10 people per table, $25 per head) or
   the buffet if I can get it jazzed up to the dinner equivalent.

Subject: Postscript,Smalltalk, and IINTX

I am experiencing a problem printing on two printers: Laserwriter IINTX and
Laserwriter IIG. On the IIG, everything seems to work fine but on the IINTX
some of the pages are not printed. I am printing from a postcript file and
using the LaserWriter 7.1.2 driver. The postcript file is generated by
VisualWorks code and sent to the printer via a Smalltalk primitive. I have
discussed this problem with ParcPlace and they say that the problem must be
the printer driver or the printer. Apple says they can't help.

If I add a showpage at the end of the postscript file I get an extra page
after every page on the IIG but everything prints fine on the IINTX (except
for the occasional extra page). I have read the technical note relating to
showpage and LaserWriter drivers but it does not seem to apply to the newer
drivers like the one I am using.

Since I am getting different behaviour from the same code on two different
printers I suspect it has something to do with the printers. Any
information you may have would be greatly apreciated.

Fist, I want to thank all of you who wrote after seeing information in TidBITS
about our Quicken 4 Updater.

Among the dozens of notes you've sent, I've received many positive comments,
valuable suggestions, and good ideas.  I hope you'll forgive me for not
responding individually, but I wanted to get back to everyone quickly.

Most of you asked about how to update your copy of Quicken 4 to our latest
maintenance release.  Adam Engst, editor of TidBITS, is working with me to put
our Updater on the main Macintosh file sites on the Internet where you'll have
access to it.

HERE'S THE SCOOP...

As part of our ongoing commitment to product support and customer service,
Intuit produces maintenance releases of our software from time to time in
order
to correct problems brought to our attention.

Our latest maintenance release is R6. Quicken 4 Release R6 includes fixes to a
few specific, customer-reported problems and improves application
compatibility
on certain platforms.

However, R6 contains no new features or feature enhancements, so you may not
notice a difference when updating your copy of Quicken 4 to Quicken 4 R6.
Most
people do not need to update to this release, but it will not hurt to do so.

To make updating your copy of Quicken 4 easy, and to allow you to update to
the
latest release at no charge, we have developed an updater patch -- the Quicken
4
Updater (to Release 6).  This patch may be used by (and distributed to) any
registered Quicken owner free of charge.

Since I don't have direct access to the Internet (and Intuit doesn't have an
Internet site at this time), TidBITS editor Adam Engst has graciously
volunteered to put the Quicken 4 Updater on the main Macintosh file sites.  I
really want to thank Adam for this -- he's going far beyond what's required
and
is helping all of us out.  (Please join me in thanking him!)

In a short while, when the updater is available at those sites, Adam will put
a
note in TidBITS saying where you can get it on the internet.

BTW, if you are not sure what your current release number is, follow the steps

Some of you asked whether Intuit has an internet address for technical
support.
Unfortunately, we don't have that capability at this time.  (While I can't say
when or if that might happen, I'm personally pushing for it -- I think it

not technical support.  And, while I always try to help when I can, my
insanely
busy schedule doesn't permit me to answer too many questions on an individual

Subject: strobe program

I'd like to write a program to make the Mac behave as a strobe light. This
means (1) getting the screen to flash, (2) accessing the clock to make it do
this at a fixed frequency, and (3) putting up sliders and so on to allow the
user to control frequency etc.

It would also be good to allow a 'soft flash', instead of an abrupt one, or
to have it start in the middle of the screen and move out to teh edge, etc.

I've programmed in C before, but would appreciate advice on how to do these

Subject: StuffIt BinHex fixer corrupt?

I think the file cmp/stuffit-lite-binhex4-307a-updt.hqx is corrupt.
I downloaded it twice and couldn't unbinhex it (and no, I'm not using
the screwed-up binhex translator to try to decode it).  I forget where
it came from, but whoever uploaded it, couldja try again?

BTW, here's my two cents on the archive's popularity, inspired at 2:30
a.m. on a Sunday, when I was told that the system was too busy and I
should try again later.  (I mean, if it gets much later than that,
it'll be early!)

The chances of connecting successfully with Gopher are slimmer than
the chances of winning the lottery.  So everyone who only has access
to Gopher should buy lottery tickets instead, and when they win, they
should buy more computers for I-M to help handle the workload. :)

Question - how can one set up a disk with a virus protection program
and system 7 to use in checking a hard disk. With earlier versions of
the system I kept a disk with disinfectant (and one with otmomizer) for
use in checking the hard drive.  With system 7 I cannot get everything
on even a HD disk.  Certainly there is a solution to this problem - any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Subject: The Internet Starter Kit - Configuring MacTCP.

I am using the configuration info from The Internet Starter Kit by Adam Engst
but cannot get MacTCP2.2 running.  My SLIP account with nwnexus is open and I
can connect but none of the software from TISK works. For example, Fetch's
dog does not move and I always get an error message saying "No name server
can be found to help locate this host. If you know the host's IP address you
should enter it directly." I have quadruple checked the configuration info
and reloaded MacTCP three times as explained in the book with no success. Can

Why do we have to use a special application like Fetch to ftp files ?

Fetch works fine, but in fact the way you work with Fetch is just as
un-macintosh as working with the Font/DA-mover. It should not be necessary
to use a special application to move files over a network connection - that
is something we have the Finder for.

Here is a wild idea: ftp should work like ARA. What I would like is a
configuration where I could set up a ftp connection by means of the Chooser,
using something like the AppleShare setup. After connecting, the network
device should appear on the desktop, and should be accessible to the Finder.

Does anybody know if something like this is possible (maybe in ARA 2.x)?
Does it sound like a good idea? Are there technical reasons why this is
impossible ?

Subject: Xmas lights conflict? (Q)

I installed Xmas Lights, enjoyed the twinkling briefly, opened my
sound control panel to reset my sound for unrelated reasons, and the
computer froze up.  IIsi running system 7.0.1, zillions of INITS.
Can anybody else reproduce this problem?  I don't feel inclined to
spend a lot of time tracking it down, but if it doesn't occur on
your computer I'll know it's probably some obscure INIT conflict and
forget about it.  If it does, the author should be informed.
